Tips and Tricks
At the start of the process ensure that you have a flat surface, and cover it with something soft to avoid the surface of the boards you are using being soiled or damaged.
Make use of pilot holes. Positioned 8mm (half of 16mm thickness of the board) from the edge of the top and bottom of the side panels. This makes it easier to join the boards.
Use a 2mm drill bit to make the pilot holes. Using a bit this thin will ensure that you don’t split the board.
The F-clamp is very helpful for securing the board to the surface while you are aligning the side panels.
Ensure that sides with edging are matched.
Once you are ready to complete the middle shelf, consider the use of a template. It helps you align the shelves and ensure that they are in the right place.
Don’t let the overall height of the side panels, top and feet of the unit exceed 750mm. Always keep in mind that you want to sit comfortably at the desk in your study nook. A desk which is too high, is going to cause frustration, as will a desk which is too low.
If you can afford a second cordless drill, purchase one as this project requires the drilling of pilot holes and screwing in of chipboard screws, a second drill makes life a little easier.
