Pre-treat tub with a household cleaner rather than muriatic acid.
To apply the Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile kit, thoroughly clean, sand, and dry the surface, then mask off the surrounding areas. Mix the two parts of the kit, wait at least an hour, and apply two thin coats using a foam roller and a brush for edges. Allow the final coat to cure for at least 72 hours before use.
1. Prepare the surface
Clean: Scrub the area with a cleaning agent (like soap and water or a bleach-based cleaner) and a scouring pad to remove soap scum and mildew, then rinse thoroughly.
Sand: Use 220 or 400-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the entire surface, then wipe down with a damp sponge to remove all dust and debris.
Dry: Ensure the surface is completely dry before proceeding.
Mask: Use painter’s tape to protect areas you don’t want to paint, such as the floor, faucet, and drain.
2. Mix the paint
Ventilate: Work in a well-ventilated area by opening windows and using fans, as the product has strong fumes. Wear gloves and a respirator mask.
Mix parts: Stir Part B (the base) thoroughly. Pour the entire contents of Part A (the activator) into Part B and mix for about one minute.
Mix small batches: If you don’t need the full kit, mix a 4:1 ratio of Part B to Part A in a separate container. The mixture must be used within 6 hours.
3. Apply the paint
Apply first coat: Use a high-quality, 1/4″ nap foam roller for flat surfaces and a fine-bristled brush for corners and edges. Apply a thin, even coat in one direction.
Wait: Allow the first coat to dry for at least one hour.
Apply second coat: Apply a second thin, even coat, making sure to maintain a smooth finish and avoid over-brushing.
Third coat (optional): If needed, apply a third coat the next day with a second kit for better coverage.
4. Clean up and cure
Clean up: Clean brushes and rollers with acetone or lacquer thinner before the paint dries.
Remove tape: Carefully remove the painter’s tape after the second coat is applied, but before it fully cures.
Cure: Wait at least 72 hours for the product to fully cure before exposing it to water or using the tub.
