To use Rust-Oleum Cold Galvanizing Compound, first prepare the surface by removing all dirt, grease, and rust with a wire brush. Then, shake the can vigorously for at least a minute before applying several light coats from a distance of 10-16 inches, moving the can in a steady back-and-forth motion. Allow about 15 minutes to dry to the touch and wait for 24 hours before applying a topcoat like latex.
Step 1: Prepare the surface
Clean the metal surface to remove all dirt, oil, grease, and existing rust.
Use a wire brush to get down to bare metal for the best results.
For best performance, apply a primer to any previously rusted areas.

Step 2: Apply the compound
Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle.
Hold the can 10–16 inches from the surface.
Apply a light, steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke.
Keep the can the same distance from the surface and in constant motion to avoid drips and runs.
Apply two or more thin coats, allowing a few minutes between each coat.

Step 3: Allow to dry and recoat
Let the compound dry to the touch in about 15 minutes.
Wait 24 hours for a full dry.
If a topcoat is desired, wait one hour to recoat, or after 24 hours. For a topcoat, a latex coating is recommended.
