To use Rustoleum black primer, shake the can for at least one minute and spray multiple light coats from 25-40cm away in a steady, back-and-forth motion. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before you begin, and allow each coat to dry for a few minutes before applying the next.

Step 1: Prepare your surface and environment
Clean the surface: Wipe the object with a clean cloth and a degreaser to remove any oil, grease, or dirt. For metal, methylated spirits are recommended.
Work in the right conditions: Apply the primer in a well-ventilated area at a temperature above freezing, as cold temperatures can affect drying.
Protect surrounding areas: Use drop cloths or other protection to shield areas you don’t want to be sprayed.

Step 2: Prepare the can
Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute, or until the mixing ball inside rattles freely.
Hold the can upright while shaking and keep it in motion during application.

Step 3: Apply the primer
Maintain distance: Hold the can 25-40cm away from the surface.
Use light coats: Apply the primer in a series of thin, even coats rather than one heavy coat.
Use a back-and-forth motion: Move the can in a steady, sweeping back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke.
Keep the can moving: Maintain a constant speed and a consistent distance from the surface to avoid drips and runs.
Apply multiple coats: Allow a few minutes between coats for optimal coverage.

Step 4: Finish and dry
Let it dry: Allow the final coat to dry according to the product instructions, which can be anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.
Sand if necessary: For a smoother surface, you can lightly sand the primer after it has dried. Use wet-or-dry sandpaper with water for metal (around #400 grit) or on a palm sander for wood (220 grit).
Clean up after sanding: Wipe down the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth after sanding to remove dust.
Apply top coat: Once the primer is fully dry, you can apply your top coat of paint.
